October? November? No! Hello December, I'm baack! Well I really never left, I'm not dead yet! I just really got into a ton of study. Last time I mentioned two massive books from Scott Robertson, How to Draw & How to Render, I'm still working on getting through those things! Perspective drawing is something I'm wanting to tackle more, so maybe more landscapes, vehicles or props! Or I'll just be doing more characters because I've got good news!
I'll be attending a Mentorship class with Anthony Jones in Jan/Feb! Signed up thanks to the help of many of my friends, for those reading this thank you so much for your help and donating. I literally could not have been able to do this without your support.
Twitch streaming? Maybe. Maaayyybe... I'm really liking the calm quiet of my books lately, they're piling up, and I've gotta read them all! Gotta be less amateur.
Now onto the fun stuff! The art! There is a bit of it since I've last posted, starting with the oldest.
Sexy mage lady, mostly a practice on learned techniques and new stuff.
Hourish of helmet design shenanigans. Felt like sharing this because it's different than my usual.
Fun paint sketch of Jane Shepard for N7 Day.
Weekly Challenge for my art group, design some Traveling Merchants.
Another Weekly Challenge for my art group, design some Sexy Mass Effect Aliens.
A rough painting testing out a traditional water color technique. This one really clicked, and took only 2-3hrs. I did have a reference, so that probably helped.
Alright folks, that's all I've got for now. I'll be working very hard up to my mentorship class, it could easily go both directions. Either I'll be sharing work like mad up to then, or I'll do one massive dump at the end of it all, either way I'll be drawing and painting, so keep an eye out . Thanks for looking!
Hey everyone, I've had a very crazy September! A perfect storm of all of my bills being due, a eviction notice scare (not my fault woot), having company over, and then getting sick?! This month was rough, at least my Birthday dinner was good. Ha! So below you'll find everything that I've done since my last post. I'll try to detail here and there but for the most part I've just wanted to show that I've still got a pulse over here! Still working on that self education, if you care to help out feel free to donate! All donations go to gumroad tutorials or bigger online courses / lessons to get into. Thanks!
Oh yeah, I also started twitch streaming too! You can find me @ https://www.twitch.tv/dougburbridgeart , I haven't done as much as I'd like but I'll be picking it back up very soon, since you know, September kicked my ass.
Below are some of my works during and around this crazy September, in no particular order.
Did this in a sitting to share on a stream. Decided to paint Blade because with all the Marvel hype it feels like he's been forgotten. This was done Aug 24th
Color & Lighting Photo Thumbnail Studies. Had a bit too much fun with the colored one, either way it was good eye training.
Did this one to practice my greyscale to color. Still defaulting to a naked lady, so this one was me trying to get it out of my system by going at it in full. I still may pick this one up, the idea was a Lady of the Lake with an awesome sword. Clothed? Maybe. Maybe not. Started this around the 5th of Sept, last touched.. ha on my birthday. Cool fact, I did some of my first twitch streaming with this piece. I'll be streaming again very soon.
Hey this guy was a fun doodle, I'd lie if I said Destiny wasn't a bit of an inspiration. done Sept 12th.
While company was over, I was suggested to make a scary tribal mask. Then to do a Fallout-like version. Sept 17th.
Tried to do some rifle iterations, but thanks to noodling I just got wayyy too detailed on one. I'm sure you can guess which. Sept 23rd.
Just some sketching, varied stuff throughout the month.
Ghost in the Shell's Motoko. She's always my default, I swear I planned on giving her clothes. Banged this one out yesterday Oct 1st.
So that's about it folks! I've tried to make up by not getting any posts done in September with this big one here. I've got a lot on my plate to work on, two HUGE awesome books from Scott Robertson, How to Draw & How to Render, as well as some awesome gumroad tutorials from Anthony Jones to nab thanks to some birthday money.
Happy to call this one done, been very busy this month. Got involved with an art group or two, and got some feedback from people who know what they're doing. I'll be stepping away from anatomy for a bit now, and focusing on my color and lighting game. Until then, here's some of my work!
This started as a Loomis method sketch, but some paint and fun later we now have this! Yes it's another woman, but baaah! They're so damned fun to draw and paint.
This last week or two I've been reaching out and making some art friends, some of which I recommended the Loomis method of creating the head. So I took advantage of this by attacking my weakness with heads, perspective. I was meaning to add more but I'll save it for next time.
And for fun, have some silly doodle-sketches/concepts from earlier this month. I wanted to do more with the dude but I got swept up in everything mentioned above.
Started out as an anatomy practice sketch, to see how well I could do without a reference, but couldn't help but play with it. I swear their armor ratings are high enough! Enjoy!
Hey all, what? Something new? Yeah! Haven't given up on art yet, just quietly learning. Since I've received some feedback, I've been taking some anatomy classes and reading some great anatomy books. Got this new one from Steve Huston, great stuff! I've also been learning how to photobash, still feels weird as hell. A bit more on that one before I feel comfortable on sharing my experiments.
For now check out some exploration of outfits for a badass monster hunter babe I did for fun! Which one is your favorite?
Outfit exploration for a civilian monster hunter babe. I think I could have done better on some of the shape language and used more accessories that communicated the characters role.
Hey all, got some fun character concepts of Pirate Captains!
Merchant Captain, The "Sea Siren" and a Blackbeard looking gent. Used some new techniques learned to color these characters super fast, and iterate different options! Tons of fun!
Linework! First guy was without ref, other two had references. It shows, but had fun either way!
Just finished some character concepts of three pirate captains, these sketches gave me a chance to test out some different workflows allowing for quick changes in color on the character. Really happy with how they came out, and the process was great to determine a good color palette. These guys were done in two evenings, super fast, well relatively for me.
Finally done with my second commission, thankfully I was able to pull myself away from Overwatch to create this piece! This time I was asked to create an illustration of a Illithid boss monster for a dungeons & dragons campaign. Had a blast creating this evil character, I don't normally create creatures like this, so it was good to get out of my comfort zone! In addition I didn't even do a lineart, just went in there painting shapes! Enjoy!
Hey look at this ugly mug! Had plenty of inspiration from Anthony Jones and Dan Luvisi to create this badass!
In other news, I've got at least two more illustrations commissions lined up! Meanwhile I'll likely be working on some projects of my own to push my design skills by doing conceptual artwork. So keep an eye out for more posts! Thanks for reading!
Hey everyone! Remember last week when I said things are calming down? Boy was I wrong! Naturally I "escape" these life stresses by doing artwork. Sketches, doodles and a study here and there during this week while juggling everything is what I've manage to get done. I still have two commissions lined up from before, and an additional. Not to mention I have the intention to rework my portfolio (at the moment my artstation page) entirely with new works geared at showcasing my ability to design and do concept work. Tonight I've just got doodles at the ready, nothing super exciting but I felt like posting -something- here. So enjoy my random doodles!
First and foremost, the sketches that I did today. A bit of a weird idea hit me when I was listening to music. Course comfort food drawing for me are women with limited clothes (really need to find something else), and I thought "Hey what if there was this universe like the movies Constantine and Blade and there was this supernaturals-only gentleman's club! That's totally cool and unheard of! (not.)" So I sketched, and just had fun with it. No stress, no sweat, and quickly done too!
I thought about naming them, but decided not to. The guy on the right is the proprietor, the vampire and oni (demon) babes are well, the entertainers. These characters were done in like three hours, maybe? Not even. Shocked myself a bit! In review, hello long necks! Good thing these were just sketches.
Next up, something less..adulty, this character was inspired by Titan AE. A show as a kid that I absolutely adored. Threw on some music and this cartoon-ish character came out. Was done in like a half hour? Super SUPER sketchy, but added color for fun.
Used inspiration from both main characters. Looks like their would-be daughter maybe?
Last but not least, this is for all you gamers, Widowmaker! Geeze, someone draw something else already! Tracer, Widowmaker, Tracer, Widowmaker! That's it. That's all that people do, well I didn't "think" on this one. I just did. Played the beta pretty hardcore with the gaming community, turns out leading and organizing groups to lead themselves is OP. Next time I'll do my main man, Reinhardt, but for now, more womanly parts.
"No one can hide from my sight." Not the scariest thing to hear but sure helps the team get a bead on everyone!
Alright everyone, that's all for tonight! I've got a lot of projects and commissions on my plate to get to work on, let alone my fair share of "real world" stuff to sludge through. As always, thank you for reading and taking the time to do so. If you enjoyed my art, feel free to search me up on Deviantart or Arstation and, follow, watch, like or upvote my stuff! Every bit of it is appreciated. Thanks!
Luckily things are calming down just enough so I could turn my focus towards my very first commission! Woo! I recently opened up commissions to my gaming community that I'm part of as practice and a way to earn a bit of cash towards more tutorials, self-education and maybe a night out or two... nah. More tutorials. Brain food lasts longer than food-food... and if anyone knows me well enough they might be shocked by that statement. Anyway, silliness aside here is the character commission I did for a member in my gaming community, she wanted a painting of her Planetside 2 character with the new Oni helmet.
My goal was to have the character come out of the shadows. Pretty happy with how it came out!
Also here is an image of some quick iterations of the character, having spoke with the "client" she decided on the "cunning" pose.
Alright everyone, it's back to the drawing board to work on my next project!
Feel free to check out my portfolio on ArtStation! If you're interested in more of my doodles, sketches and general stuff than swing by my DeviantArt page for a look. Don't forget to check back here on my Blog to follow my journey as a self-taught artist. Every bit of support not only helps a ton, but also encourages me to continue striving for my dream. This first commission is a huge step forward towards my future!
I've got a lot on the plate so this should be exciting; one of my biggest tasks to tackle next is to redirect my portfolio towards concept art instead of illustrations. Thanks to some valuable input, I've realized I'm leaning too far into illustration and drifting away from conceptual art. I'd like to fix that. It's time to take what I've learned in this past year and run with it. Thanks for reading!
Hey all, I'm very excited to share some new paintings / practices that I've done within the last two days. Thanks to the internet and resources on it, I'm able to learn tons! Yesterday I purchased a super cheap tutorial on values, "How to Improve Your Values" by Anthony Jones. While it was a quick 45mins it was an important 45mins. In short he explains putting local value first before lighting information. I should have known this, but it seems like I never corrected that bad habit. Below is an example of my first attempt with this fresh new outlook!
This character was inspired by the video game Civilizaton Beyond Earth, she is a Pan-Asian Cooperative spy/agent.
I've always wanted to make my digital painting look more traditional, there is something about that oil painted stroke feel that just feels.. warm and I guess you could say it pleases my "aesthetic sensibilities," whatever that means. I also want to improve on my ability to bring a more vivid and interesting color palette. So thanks to a little digging on youtube I found myself a video on Monday on how to achieve just that, by an artist named of Ahmed Aldoori, Well, it's about using an underpainting and colors but it feels more painterly than what I've been doing. I'll share the video and my work below!
Helpful stuff! Also grabbed his brushes, nothing too out of the ordinary but it gave a different light to what I always considered was the "hair brush." So was also something learned. Below is an image I did in my own style, but using the same approach.
Anatomy wasn't the focus, and I found myself noodling on it just to fix things here and there. So I called it done in order to move on. So she may not be the prettiest woman out there, but I do like the style and color.
Of course I've also done some Master Studies during this time, they're nothing crazy or to call home about but I'll share it just to share it, this was done before the new approach in values (this was done on Monday). Looking forward to my next study. These we're done in 15mins a pop. My goal was to get the major white/grey/blacks in the right-ish position to learn composition. So ultimately, squint hard enough and it should look the same.
Lastly, a friend of mine asked me to make something creepy and gross. Again this was before my values lesson and would have benefited greatly from it had I done it after, but it does show a good before and after on what I've learned. So behold some quick 30min sketch-paint of a creepy dude-thing.
Yay! You're at the end! Well, almost. In other news, I'm starting to pick up commissions within my gaming community for super cheap, I'll be testing the waters on doing commissioned work, the goal here is to gain some experience with handling projects, people and hitting deadlines, etc. (just got my first one!) All things going well, I with a little bit of luck will go for commissions publicly. This will help not only with bills, but also with tutorials, lessons and online resources that can make up for the lack of formal education I decided to opt out on. To top it all off, I'll be starting projects of my own designed to strengthen my ability to... well, design. So more conceptual art, less illustration art.
As always thanks for reading!
Also remember to check me out on Artstation or DeviantArt!
Here's a fun one I did for some friends in my gaming community! After hearing they've been doing D&D campaigns I immediately thought of doing this at some point because I figured I'd be fun, and it was! Especially after doing those recent character sketches, I felt up to the challenge.
While I can't say I really dig on their names, well except one, I can say I'm pretty happy with the quality of each character. Photo references were used on all of them to give me an anchor, and I feel like I got better rendering even within the picture itself as I did these in a span of two days. I believe the last two (the fighter and wizard) are a bit better planned out than the other two elf peoples.
Also what gives on the new 5th edition gnomes? Not at all what I expected!
I also have a bit of news!
I now have an official Paypal which means I can take on commissions (soon TM)! I'll have something set up on Deviant Art and on my blog to take in. Thinking about 3 slots at most to get the ball rolling. I've got a bit of research to do too, to prep myself.
Also I can now accept generous and awesome donations, I've added a new module to the blog at the bottom right of the website where you can now donate towards my art education!
All donations are STRICTLY used for tutorials and lessons. Places like Gumroad, Gnomon workshop, Art Camp and Learned Squared are on the wish list. Hoewever, starting small with gumroad tutorials will be the first step (approx 5-10usd per), because things like Noah Bradley's the Art of Freelancing is just too much without doing commissions.
Lastly, someone shared my work on reddit without me being involved, so that's cool and a first! That's all for me tonight! Thanks for reading!
Surprised myself on how quick I did this. Gotta get faster, and do more.
Here's some quick character sketches I did earlier today! These fun doodles lasted around 15-30mins per each character and a collective bit of time noodling around to render further because I was having a bit too much fun!
I plan on doing a ton more of these sketches in the future, practicing faces and characters. Eventually I'd like to do more than stoic expressions. The Lawman was the most fun, I may paint him later. Which one do you guys like?
As always, thanks for reading. More to come in the coming days!
I'll cut to the chase, this last month I flopped on staying consistent and posting here to my blog! Sorry readers! Admittedly I've been in a bit of a funk, with the passing of a close family friend and all sorts of life drama, posting my little achievements didn't feel worth it. Well, enough of that BS it's time to get back on the horse.
In truth I really never did stop, but I did stop sharing which isn't good. Over the last month I've been watching and reading tutorials, reading good ol' Imagine FX, and practicing new techniques that I've learned. Watched a lot of interviews with industry professionals, one where Anthony Jones citied a dude named Steve Huston. That lead to searching about the guy and learning about him. As an example, I found this helpful lesson, "How to Draw the Head and Face / Portrait with Steve Huston," it's three hours long! For those interested I'll embed it below. Good stuff!
Within the last month I had been working on a piece for my Mothers birthday! At the moment it's at a near-finished state. It's colored and all, I could share it but what would be the fun in that (hint it has something to do with Everquest)! The hair gave me a curve ball and for whatever reason I didn't feel like I would do it justice. So I started something else, with a bit of focus on hair and how to take what I've learned and apply it to the other work.
This piece only took me a day to get to a point where I was happy, but I spent another day refining it and giving it that extra push. I was extremely happy with it and was near tempted to leave it alone, but I didn't! This piece is very close to my heart as well, it's a picture of Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect trilogy! Specifically Jane Shepard because I wanted to practice long hair. Admittedly though I've never played as her in the series.
Still surprised I did the majority of this in one day. Also lens flare, because Mass Effect. Also it fits my monitor perfectly!
I'm starting to think about going into some commissions to gain more experience and help out with the whole living thing, what do you all think? Am I ready? I plan on trying but of course confidence is another thing.
To explain a bit of the process on this painting, it started without any line work at all. I just went at it silhouette first. Of course I used the hell out of clipping masks and transparency layer lock features in photoshop. Believe it or not the armor took longer to render than the face or the hair, I suppose that had to do with my approach and having no line art to fall back on. At the end I had done about 5-6 color level adjustments (orange hues, blue hues, green hues) and funnily enough decided to stick with my guns on this one. Especially once I put in the background and lens flare, it all started to gell. Hope you guys like it! I'm super pleased.
I've got a lot in plan for pieces to do, but my biggest goal is to achieve a painterly look to imitate a traditional oil paint look. An example, while I don't often do this and tend to use textured brushes, the piece above used a soft round and hard round brush predominately. It didn't really bother me, I just had a ton of fun with it and I suppose it shows.
As always, thanks for reading! Hope to post before the month is over this time!
Hey everybody, had a crappy week this week. For whatever reason I couldn't get into the grove, so my productivity and learning suffered a little bit. It didn't help matters that a family friend passed on Wednesday. So that was a bummer.
On a positive note, I sat down to do a practice / photo study of the human eye. I really wanted to push it, see how far I could go before I didn't know what to do next. I learned a lot from this just alone. This coincided with some lessons from Dan Luvisi on how he renders out the eye. Without that I probably wouldn't have made such an improvement.
I still suck at eyebrows. Unfortunately I blew it on this one by merging it down too early and not giving the layer a drop shadow to give the hairs more depth. Whoops. Otherwise pretty happy about it!
Remember that Fortuneteller lady from last week? Well I caught wind of a guide / tutorial on how Stanley "Artgerm" Lau handles how to add colors to a greyscale painting. I had a basic idea on how I might approach it beforehand, but it's nice to have someone clearly lay it all out. I somehow knew that gradient maps would come in handy in the process! I love this approach, it makes it where changing colors is fast and clean, allowing me to save time and nail what a potential client would want. I look forward to incorporating this into my workflow.
The color addition was done extremely quick! If I really wanted to take this to a finish I'd paint over some areas, but I'm happy with it as a test.
Thanks for reading! I'll be making up for the failed week by working through the weekend. I have some killer ideas for full on compositions. I may start working on thumbs as soon as tonight or early tomorrow! So keep an eye out!
Hey everyone, this one will be short! Why so? Food! That's why.
So to keep it short today I sat down to complete a Draw Box Challenge. This time I drew from the box and got a character! Lucky for me I've recently been practicing skin, unfortunately I didn't even use those techniques on the painting below, outside a better understanding of the fundamentals below is just a single brush and a bit of sweat. Originally the draw boxes are aimed at two hours, in that time I had the sketch down and a rough value lay in. Three hours later, and the Eerie Fortune Teller is complete!
Simple painting, no references used. Being a fan of fantasy, I found inspiration in Everquest's Erudites. Big freaky fore-headed magic users.
I may go on to add color into the painting just for the fun of it later tonight. Still have another practice to complete for tonight before I can officially shut my brain off.
My later practice box challenge is on vehicles, and it's a master study. Never seen anyone do a master study on that subject, but I at least have a good subject. I'll be checking out Scott Robertsons work along with some of his awesome youtube videos. Already delved into one and gained a simple but useful idea of "P.S.D" meaning Proportion, then Surface, and Detail. A quick rule to follow when designing!
Hey readers, it's that time again, time to share what I've been up to. As the title says, I've been practicing a lot. Some practices I'll show here, others may become full projects, where as others even got tossed into the trash.
So why all the practice? Well the girlfriend and I decided that the draw box wasn't enough! Now I have a Practice Box that includes things like Master Studies, Anatomy Studies, Texture Spheres and more! The draw box is now being adjusted to creative works only, two hours worth of sketching or quick.. ish, iterations and concepts. Still working on that one, favoring learning fundamentals so I'll let the clock run on some stuff. Which is why I don't have anything to show from that (yet.)
So yesterday I actually had a special challenge of doing 10 different skin tones / textures in the form of a ball. The catch for doing that many, was a trip to get some frozen custard as a reward. Which was totally a win-win since I'm really happy with how the practice came out. I even had a bit of fun with it, rather than doing simple balls of skin, I added a bit of character & detail to each. Admittedly though, it felt like the volume was still lacking. Started off low contrast, so that might have been why, or it could be because of no cast shadows and different lighting on each object. Either way, check it out!
Played with lighting on each ball as well. FX details come from Luvusi's tutorials.
Funnily enough the day before, I had received another practice involving a sphere. An odd one, but it was fun to try to wrap Chinchilla fur around a ball. Luckily they're ball-shaped enough so rendering hair on a sphere didn't require much imagination. Reference picture left on image for fun, I avoided using the grey on the coat, I was shooting more for the texture than local values.
Ref. pic left on image for viewer benefit. I avoided the coat pattern, was shooting for texture more than local value.
Lastly, I'll be sharing the practice I just completed, thankfully I was using a different set of muscles rather than texture practice. The practice was to study the muscle anatomy of a human back, get it, using a different set of muscles! Ha. I'm funny right? I'll stick to the art. In this study I spent about an hour reviewing some muscle lessons from Proko, as well as observing similar studies to identify muscle location. Not as focused on names as much as location, function and general shape.
Used a Proko model image to get a rough idea of muscle location by tracing over it and color coding it. Sketched from Burne Hogarth and reapplied coloring to locate muscles.
I've got a character concept in the works as well from a draw box, and that's all I'll say about that. Alright, that's all for tonight folks! Have a good one, thanks for reading!
Hey everyone! Finally ready to call this one done. This character was inspired by the game Fallout 4, the idea was very simple, a Brotherhood of Steel femme fatale. I've named her "Red," a fiery redheaded badass!
"Red," a Brotherhood of Steel Femme Fatale, I hope her armor tells a story, and brings you to ask what does she do, where has she been?
Originally I had wanted to throw blood splatter down the side of her, but it just felt too artificial for my liking so I went without. I had a lot of inspiration from Dan Luvisi's works, especially after watching some character tutorials of his. I'd say with this piece I've learned the most, both during it all and in reflection.
Just to name a few things, get better at composition, eyes, lighting, hair, skin texture, metal rusted texture, blood splatter effects.. actually doing thumbnails! This one started off just shooting in one direction, I know if I spent the extra time in the front half of the project I would have spent less time later noodling with ideas.
This piece took me way too long to complete, it felt like a grind, having one session of work span over 24hrs I've been ready to have this piece done and out of the way to move on to the next thing. In fact I'll be doing a practice to warm-up after this post.
In other news, I found an awesome new resource to help me, ImagineFX magazine. I had always known about it, but never really considered giving it a serious glance until recently. Man, could I have used this a year ago! So much to learn, and so little time.
Thank you all for reading, keep an eye out for more soon! I've decided to amp up my draw box challenges and bring in practice box challenges. Master studies, texture studies, technique practice, etc. So one box serves as creative outlet, the other technique practice and eye training.
Evening all! Picked up a tutorial recently from Eytan Zana on Graphic Composition for Environments, the idea is to nail your shape language and composition with just a few values so that it reads well. This is really important when trying to present a story or scene. So the picture below is a practice of that. I had done a handful of them but the one below is the only one that I liked enough to share. I may make it into a full piece sometime, I may not.
In other news, the Fallout lady is slowly coming along. Burnt myself out on her by overworking her face, so it was one of those two steps forward and three steps back, didn't like the road I was taking. Tonight I'll be hitting it hard, my hope is to have a final ready by tomorrows post.
It's like a gigantic thumbnail. My first attempt at this approach, hope it tells a story. Too many values, need to limit myself better next time.
Hey all, remember that awesome Fallout Fanart I was working on late January? Well I decided to pick it back up and get it to a point where I felt pleased with it. I also have every intention on returning to the Motoko piece as well now that I've learned more. As it stands I'm still working on this character, and it's been a blast doing so.
I've taken a lot of inspiration from Dan Luvisi and his way of decking out a character painting with rich story driven details. So no detail is for just detail sake, it all has a purpose. I'd like to think that's the best way to go about it. Check it out below, see if you gather any story from the character or not. I'm sure fans of the Fallout franchise will pick up on some details.
I've also been inspired by John Grello. The dude is an ace with characters as well. Simply put I've been watching available youtube videos just to figure out what the guy does and try to do similar myself.
Below you'll find my most recent shot, I had just added the idea of localized color and was about to attack texture like rust, more scratches on the metal, etc. Note that the red markings / text are all placeholders for ideas, yet to be rendered in.
Say hello to Red. Her power armor says badass and her face says pin-up girl, and I'm okay with that!
Remember the top left? That's what I last shared. The rest are some progress shots as I started reworking the face and armor.
Thanks for reading! Hope to have this one done relatively soon!
Got a fun little Draw Box challenge, paint a pumpkin. So I decided to make it sort of a study by having a photo reference to look at, but kind of make it my own at the same time. Very simple, was a good bit of fun and enjoyed trying to achieve the texture of the surface.
Simple practice is simple.
I also have been working closely with a friend of mine on a wood crafting of his, he needed a celtic knotting design on the top of a jewelry box. My role was to help visualize some options and come to a conclusion on what precisely he wanted. Below is an image of a few early ideas. Last image is final. It's very rough, but it would be used as a transparency anyways.
Final
Last but not least, I've been working on another piece. Remember that Brotherhood of Steel Fallout Lady? Well, it should be done in time for tomorrows post. Super excited! Gotta work on it now! Bye!
Hey all, today I decided to pull a challenge out of the "Draw Box" that my girlfriend made out of a tissue box. Got something that is out of my comfort zone, plants, well, fungi, specifically mushrooms. It was an awesome challenge for rendering out textures, and my newest brushes made a huge impact. I tried to design each mushroom with a different texture to it. We also made up ideas for these different kinds of mushrooms on the fly, so some are more cohesive and others less. I had a blast with this little project. Made it with the intention of being a concept work.
I absolutely love the Wooly Mushroom and was extremely pleased with the hair texture. No photos used!
Hey everyone, decided to revisit the drawing, sketch, doodles I did in my last post and paint one. Of course I picked the Asari, because Mass Effect is an awesome universe. Two things were going on here, a "new" set of brushes and the painting was more of a value practice. So I kept it to greys and practiced how well I could convey lighting and texture.
In truth these "new" brushes aren't so new, I've had these brushes for awhile, but never sat down to really attempt using them as they were intended. These brushes come from Shaddy Safadi, and I love the infographic-guide-thing that he put together for these brushes.
So here's what I did with those brushes, I was really happy with how they achieved a painterly look. I know it'll take some time until I am able to use these brushes efficiently, it's why I decided last summer not to touch them, and stick to learning the fundamentals. Thankfully I can say I think I'm ready to start using these tools more often. It didn't take all that long to really get the value study going, I spent most of my time noodling with what I could do with the brushes.
Didn't bother removing all the lines, and Asari eyebrows.. what are they? Not hair, that's for sure. Left that untouched.
