Obligatory "I'm Not Dead" Post

October? November? No! Hello December, I'm baack! Well I really never left, I'm not dead yet! I just really got into a ton of study. Last time I mentioned two massive books from Scott Robertson, How to Draw & How to Render, I'm still working on getting through those things! Perspective drawing is something I'm wanting to tackle more, so maybe more landscapes, vehicles or props! Or I'll just be doing more characters because I've got good news!

I'll be attending a Mentorship class with Anthony Jones in Jan/Feb! Signed up thanks to the help of many of my friends, for those reading this thank you so much for your help and donating. I literally could not have been able to do this without your support.

Twitch streaming? Maybe. Maaayyybe... I'm really liking the calm quiet of my books lately, they're piling up, and I've gotta read them all! Gotta be less amateur.

Now onto the fun stuff! The art! There is a bit of it since I've last posted, starting with the oldest.

Sexy mage lady, mostly a practice on learned techniques and new stuff.

Hourish of helmet design shenanigans. Felt like sharing this because it's different than my usual.

Fun paint sketch of Jane Shepard for N7 Day.

Weekly Challenge for my art group, design some Traveling Merchants.

Another Weekly Challenge for my art group, design some Sexy Mass Effect Aliens.

A rough painting testing out a traditional water color technique. This one really clicked, and took only 2-3hrs. I did have a reference, so that probably helped.

Alright folks, that's all I've got for now. I'll be working very hard up to my mentorship class, it could easily go both directions. Either I'll be sharing work like mad up to then, or I'll do one massive dump at the end of it all, either way I'll be drawing and painting, so keep an eye out . Thanks for looking!

Busy September

Hey everyone, I've had a very crazy September! A perfect storm of all of my bills being due, a eviction notice scare (not my fault woot), having company over, and then getting sick?! This month was rough, at least my Birthday dinner was good. Ha! So below you'll find everything that I've done since my last post. I'll try to detail here and there but for the most part I've just wanted to show that I've still got a pulse over here! Still working on that self education, if you care to help out feel free to donate! All donations go to gumroad tutorials or bigger online courses / lessons to get into. Thanks!

Oh yeah, I also started twitch streaming too! You can find me @ https://www.twitch.tv/dougburbridgeart , I haven't done as much as I'd like but I'll be picking it back up very soon, since you know, September kicked my ass.

Below are some of my works during and around this crazy September, in no particular order.

Did this in a sitting to share on a stream. Decided to paint Blade because with all the Marvel hype it feels like he's been forgotten. This was done Aug 24th

Color & Lighting Photo Thumbnail Studies. Had a bit too much fun with the colored one, either way it was good eye training.

Did this one to practice my greyscale to color.  Still defaulting to a naked lady, so this one was me trying to get it out of my system by going at it in full. I still may pick this one up, the idea was a Lady of the Lake with an awesome sword. Clothed? Maybe. Maybe not.  Started this around the 5th of Sept, last touched.. ha on my birthday. Cool fact, I did some of my first twitch streaming with this piece. I'll be streaming again very soon.

Hey this guy was a fun doodle, I'd lie if I said Destiny wasn't a bit of an inspiration. done Sept 12th.

While company was over, I was suggested to make a scary tribal mask. Then to do a Fallout-like version. Sept 17th.

Tried to do some rifle iterations, but thanks to noodling I just got wayyy too detailed on one. I'm sure you can guess which. Sept 23rd.

Just some sketching, varied stuff throughout the month.

Ghost in the Shell's Motoko. She's always my default, I swear I planned on giving her clothes. Banged this one out yesterday Oct 1st.

So that's about it folks! I've tried to make up by not getting any posts done in September with this big one here. I've got a lot on my plate to work on, two HUGE awesome books from Scott Robertson, How to Draw & How to Render, as well as some awesome gumroad tutorials from Anthony Jones to nab thanks to some birthday money.

Always forward!

Anatomy Practice has payed off!

Hey everyone!

Happy to call this one done, been very busy this month. Got involved with an art group or two, and got some feedback from people who know what they're doing. I'll be stepping away from anatomy for a bit now, and focusing on my color and lighting game. Until then, here's some of my work!

This started as a Loomis method sketch, but some paint and fun later we now have this! Yes it's another woman, but baaah! They're so damned fun to draw and paint.

This last week or two I've been reaching out and making some art friends, some of which I recommended the Loomis method of creating the head. So I took advantage of this by attacking my weakness with heads, perspective. I was meaning to add more but I'll save it for next time.

And for fun, have some silly doodle-sketches/concepts from earlier this month. I wanted to do more with the dude but I got swept up in everything mentioned above.

Thanks for looking! Until next time!

Fantasy Warrior Ladies

Started out as an anatomy practice sketch, to see how well I could do without a reference, but couldn't help but play with it. I swear their armor ratings are high enough! Enjoy!

Monster Hunter Outfits

Hey all, what? Something new? Yeah! Haven't given up on art yet, just quietly learning. Since I've received some feedback, I've been taking some anatomy classes and reading some great anatomy books. Got this new one from Steve Huston, great stuff! I've also been learning how to photobash, still feels weird as hell. A bit more on that one before I feel comfortable on sharing my experiments.

For now check out some exploration of outfits for a badass monster hunter babe I did for fun! Which one is your favorite?

Outfit exploration for a civilian monster hunter babe. I think I could have done better on some of the shape language and used more accessories that communicated the characters role.

Three Pirate Captains

Hey all, got some fun character concepts of Pirate Captains!

Merchant Captain, The "Sea Siren" and a Blackbeard looking gent. Used some new techniques learned to color these characters super fast, and iterate different options! Tons of fun!

Linework! First guy was without ref, other two had references. It shows, but had fun either way!

Just finished some character concepts of three pirate captains, these sketches gave me a chance to test out some different workflows allowing for quick changes in color on the character. Really happy with how they came out, and the process was great to determine a good color palette. These guys were done in two evenings, super fast, well relatively for me.

Thanks for checking it out!

Second Commission!

Hey all!

Finally done with my second commission, thankfully I was able to pull myself away from Overwatch to create this piece! This time I was asked to create an illustration of a Illithid boss monster for a dungeons & dragons campaign. Had a blast creating this evil character, I don't normally create creatures like this, so it was good to get out of my comfort zone! In addition I didn't even do a lineart, just went in there painting shapes! Enjoy!

Hey look at this ugly mug! Had plenty of inspiration from Anthony Jones and Dan Luvisi to create this badass!
In other news, I've got at least two more illustrations commissions lined up! Meanwhile I'll likely be working on some projects of my own to push my design skills by doing conceptual artwork. So keep an eye out for more posts! Thanks for reading!
